Saltillos have the following unique characteristics: They...

• Have little craters.
• Are not all the same size.
• Are not all the same thickness.
• Are not all flat.
• Are not all square.
• Have occasional cracks on the surface.
• Have on occasional animal print. (to have one of this you have to be very lucky).
• Are not all the same color. (they even vary in shading in the same tile).
• Are prone to have alkali in the clay. To eliminate problems they must be properly sealed and kept sealed.
